Hiriketiya

The highlight of my time in Sri Lanka was visiting the coastal surf town of Hiriketiya. The local people here were even more laid-back, many with long hair and salty skin, weathered from days by the sea. We spent four days lying on the beach, surfing, and drinking coconuts. Each evening we would watch the surfers from one of the many bars along the shoreline. Places like this make me feel wholesome.

We spent the rest of our trip around the central and southern areas of Sigirya, Kandy and Ella. This region is full of jungle, waterfalls, hikes, temples, and tea plantations.

This trip left me inspired to spend more time in Asia, to learn more about the people, their culture, and ways of life.

The Sri Lankan people are always smiling. Despite having far fewer “things” than we do in the Western world, they seem content and don’t stress the small stuff. I sense that living life at a slower pace gives them a deeper appreciation for life itself. Maybe this stems from their Hindu and Buddhist beliefs.
